Special Olympics of Maryland

Championing Athletes with Disabilities

For over 20 years, Pica & Associates has represented Special Olympics Maryland, which provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

When our firm was hired, Special Olympics received an annual grant of $35,000. Today, that grant stands at $1,000,000—a direct result of our advocacy. The funding supports the Unified Sports program, which pairs athletes with intellectual disabilities alongside nondisabled teammates in every Maryland county and Baltimore City.

In 2008, Pica & Associates helped draft the Fitness and Athletic Equity for Students with Disabilities Act and shepherded it through the Maryland General Assembly—making Maryland the first state in the nation to enact such a law.
